Open Board Positions

Members of the board are directors and peer tutors of secondary school writing or learning centers or those involved with secondary school writing or learning centers. Board members meet on a monthly basis via Zoom, as agreed upon by the board itself.

In addition to planning our annual, international conference, the board also carries out other activities related to the SSWCA Mission, including but not limited to:

  • Expanding our mission and vision to fit a national scope of secondary school writing and peer tutoring centers
  • Reviewing grants and scholarships
  • Writing and contributing resources for use by all centers
  • Reviewing article submissions for The Journal of Peer Tutoring in Secondary Schools
  • Serving on standing committees, including digital roundtables to develop digital collaboration opportunities for tutors and directors
  • Other initiatives and priorities as decided upon by the Board

HOW DO I APPLY?

If you are interested in being considered for one (or more) of these positions, please complete the form at the bottom of this page no later than April 10, 2024 with the following information:

  • Your name, school, and preferred email address
  • The position(s) you are running for
  • A 100 word bio to be included with the voting ballot. In no more than 100 words, write about your background and experience with writing or learning centers in the third person. You should write about why you would like to hold the position you are running for and discuss what you hope to contribute to the organization.

In order to run for a position on the Board, you must have been involved with SSWCA in one of the following ways during the past two years: member, conference attendee, or journal author. If elected, you will be expected to purchase a membership for the following academic year. Please review the positions currently open and send in your nomination for the role(s) which you would like to serve. You can also fill out the form to nominate another person. The board will then confirm their acceptance of the nomination. 

  • The nomination window for others is open now. PLEASE NOTE: Nominees will be invited to provide a short biography and explanation as to why they are running for the position.
  • The nomination window for yourself is open now through end of day, April 10, 2024.

*In order to run for a position on the Board, your school must have a current (2023-24) SSWCA membership or have paid to attend the conference. If elected, you will be expected to renew your school’s membership for 2024-25.

BOARD VACANCIES ELECTED IN SPRING 2024

TREASURER (1 open seat)

The elected treasurer will oversee the financial matters of the organization and ensure that funds are deposited promptly in the appropriate accounts. The treasurer will be involved in preparing the organizational budget. The treasurer will have the responsibility of keeping books and preparing checks.  The treasurer will work together with the secretary to ensure the reports and filings to the state and federal authorities are made in a timely manner. Two year term not ending in the same year as the president. Renewable. Elected in odd years. NOTE: In order to serve as vice president, one must have served on the SSWCA board for at least one term prior.

SECRETARY (1 open seat)

The elected secretary will take minutes at every meeting and keep organized records for this organization.  The secretary works with the president and vice-president to communicate with membership. The secretary will work together with the treasurer to ensure the reports and filings to the state and federal authorities are made in a timely manner. Two year term not ending in the same year as the president. Renewable. Elected in odd years.

TUTOR REPRESENTATIVE (2 open seats)

The elected student representatives will be responsible for providing input to the board, and advising them on student- centered issues. As they are elected by their peers, they will have voting rights on the board. Student representatives will also be responsible for reaching out to peer tutors, facilitating partnerships between schools, and maintaining peer tutor and alumni contact lists. Any current peer tutor at a SSWCA-affiliated secondary school is eligible to apply. One year term. Renewable.

REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES (3 open seats): Northwest, Capital Area, and Midwest

The elected Regional Representatives will serve as liaisons to different regions to ensure that our programs and initiatives are inclusive of and representative of peer tutoring programs throughout the country. The number of Regional Representatives elected to the board will be determined by membership in the organization. Two year term. Renewable at representative’s discretion for up to two terms. (See below for map of regions)

MEMBER AT LARGE (1 open seat)

At-large members will be integral members of the board, responsible for providing input and participating on Standing Committees to further the purposes and mission of the organization. They will have voting rights on the board. Secondary school writing center directors, administrators, and university partners are eligible to apply. One year term. Renewable for up to three terms at representative’s discretion.

WEBSITE CURATOR (1 open seat)

The Website Curator is responsible for the upkeep of website content and design and ensures that our domain registration and hosting are current. The curator supports members of the organization and informs non-members of the organization by ensuring  that the site is easily navigable, robust in content, and inviting. The Website Curator also proposes and implements ideas for developing the website, including publication of resources and blog updates in support of the mission of the organization. Two year term. Renewable at representative’s discretion for up to two terms.

COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR (1 open seat)

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for the upkeep of content and design of the SSWCA social media accounts, working together with the Board and especially the Website Curator, to promote news and events of the organization through these platforms. Two year term.

 

Anyone interested in running for one of the above positions should complete the application below by April 10, 2024. Elections will take place at the end of April, with all directors and tutors from current SSWCA member schools able to vote. New board members will transition into their roles in May 2024.
