Regional Writing Center Organizations and Other Related Organizations

SSWCA promotes connection between all types of writing and learning centers at all levels. While SSWCA is the only writing center organization specific to secondary schools, there are many regional organizations that offer community and support. Plus, these are great ways to make university writing center connections for yourself and your tutors. Use the list below to find your regional writing center organization or other peer tutoring organizations. If you would like to be added to this list or have your information updated, please email admin@sswca.org.

East Central Writing Centers Association (ECWCA)

The East Central Writing Centers Association (ECWCA) is committed to supporting the diversity and inclusion of individuals, writing centers, institutions, and communities across our region; to that end, we define writing centers broadly as settings or spaces where people engage in the social process of composing across media, modalities, and technologies for both academic and non-academic purposes. We enact and advocate for literacy development by fostering communication, encouraging scholarship and research, and promoting effective practices among colleagues in all writing centers.

The ECWCA is a regional affiliate of the International Writing Center Association. Our organization includes members from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. We offer an annual conference, typically held in March or April, a semester-long book club each fall and spring, and are developing additional outreach opportunities including a new journal. We welcome involvement from members to support these initiatives! Learn more about us on our website: https://ecwca.wildapricot.org/. Please reach out to ECWCA Vice President Christina Klimo with any inquiries (cklimo1@udayton.edu).

Midwest Writing Center Association (MWCA)

As a regional nonprofit organization and an affiliate of the International Writing Centers Association, the Midwest Writing Centers Association (MWCA) encourages communication and collaboration among writing centers in the Midwestern region of the United States, which include Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Upper Michigan, and Wisconsin. Our mission is to assist writing centers in promoting clear and effective writing, offer support to those who are involved in writing center work, and encourage scholarly activities, such as primary/secondary research and presentations/publications of research results.

Our membership is inclusive; administrators, faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduates all enjoy the benefits of their involvement with the MWCA. Members come from middle schools, high schools, community colleges, and universities. Not all members are from writing centers; many come from a variety of writing programs and student support services.

National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW)

“The National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) promotes the teaching of writing through collaborative learning. Peer tutors and NCPTW professionals help students become self-sufficient writers. NCPTW professionals are leaders in collaborative approaches, responding to the challenges of creating and operating writing centers, developing innovative peer tutoring programs, and promoting the work of their peer tutors. The NCPTW offers peer tutors the opportunity to contribute in professional and scholarly ways to the larger writing center community, and we’re dedicated to providing forums for tutors to share and present research at national and international conferences.”

NCPTW is a national organization and has hosted an annual conference across the country and virtually. The conference in 2023 will be hosted in Pittsburgh on November 2-5. It will be co-chaired by Renee Brown and Dr. Jim Purdy.
