In memory of Elijah Bustamante-Martinez
On Mar 22, 2025 Elijah Bustamante-Martinez, a beloved writing center tutor from Hillcrest High School in Midvale, Utah, tragically died in a car accident after presenting at the SSWCA conference.
On the bus ride back from the conference Elijah couldn’t wait to incorporate all of the ideas he had gathered from the conference into his school’s writing center. Elijah was truly one of a kind and played a crucial role in founding and sustaining the Hillcrest Writing Center. Although Elijah is no longer here physically, we hope that his spirit can continue to inspire others through the Elijah Bustamonte-Martinez scholarship.
Elijah was only in the 11th grade at the time of his passing; however, his director expressed that he would have surely applied to the Tutor Impact Scholarship. SSWCA believes that Elijah represents the perfect example of a student deserving of this scholarship as he went above and beyond in sustaining and improving his center’s community. Brianna Gerstner, the former director of the Hillcrest High School Writing Center, says “Though I was the one to initiate the idea of starting a writing center at our school, it was Elijah who ran with it and made our center successful.” A fellow peer tutor comments, “Elijah wasn’t just a part of the Writing Center, he was the pulse that kept it alive. His energy is what glued the Writing Center together, lifting us when we were discouraged; his passion stitched us together. All Elijah wanted to do was help people, and while he left a considerable impact, his work is far from finished.”
SSWCA decided it was very fitting to rename the Student Impact Scholarship the Elijah Bustamante-Martinez Scholarship in the hope of carrying on his influence.
It is important to not just recognize the fact that Elijah is gone, but to recognize what he did while he was here. His goals were beyond ambitious, with hopes to become the student body president, attend Harvard, become a doctor for the military and of course, become a Spotify rapper on the side. He had already created his own music and performed an original, Go the Distance, for the whole school. According to one of his Hillcrest peers, “It was a full production, but it wasn’t the spectacle that moved us, it was the message. A message of self-confidence, potential, and pride in who we are”. Elijah was also very involved in Hillcrest High School’s medical pathway, taking anatomy and even helping to produce a rap song to promote the Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA).
Elijah’s bright personality and passion to help others was admired by all. A fellow Hillcrest tutor said “If Elijah were the embodiment of one thing, it would be the sun… there wasn’t a single day when he wasn’t radiating the brightest energy”.
He left an impact everywhere he went, including the 2025 SSWCA Conference in Provo, Utah. It wasn’t just his compelling presentation that caused him to stand out, it was also the way he carried himself throughout the conference that set him apart from others. He eagerly took notes, volunteered, and participated in discussions, making every speaker feel heard. He praised multiple speakers, boosting their confidence and even went out of his way to tell other tutors at a new writing center how great they were doing. A Hillcrest student who attended the conference shared that “He sincerely complimented them on their camaraderie, accomplishments with administration, and even their shirts that proudly displayed their role as writing center tutors, despite only knowing them for less than an hour”. This really shows Elijah’s profound impact he left on everyone he met.
Elijah’s story reminds us that true impact isn’t measured in years, but in the lives we touch and the love we share. Though his time was brief, Elijah gave all of himself to the people and passions he cared about. His legacy will continue through the students who receive the Elijah Bustamante-Martinez Scholarship—students who, like him, lead with heart, lift others with their words, and strive to make their communities better. May we all carry forward Elijah’s light, and may his life forever inspire us to go the distance.
